Hello! I’m in my last year of my Business Studies Programme. Let me start off with a bit of background information. This thesis is the last assignments of my Bachelor’s. Unexpectedly, I have a resit exam this August so I won’t be able to finish it myself before the next academic year. I’m quite sad and ashamed to say that this is my last resort to finish my degree. If things remain unclear, please don’t hesitate to ask for clarification. I’d rather provide some answers than have my thesis take a wrong path. I will try to answer as soon as possible, probably within 24 hours. After my exam, I’m fully available for support.
Form of the thesis
The form of my thesis is a literature study without empirical or explorative research. The aim of the study is to synthesize the various research reports on the economic approaches to organizations, looking for consistencies and discrepancies. Furthermore, the thesis should include a recommendation for the organizational form of bioethanol firms with the aim to tie the different approaches together and to apply the findings in the context of the U.S. bioethanol industry. For background information of the BSc thesis process at my university, you can take a glance at the course guide document I included.
My supervisor is an expert on the organisation of agrifood value chains, with special attention to cooperatives and producer organisations (POs). His research focusses on organisational issues as well as the sustainability, resilience and inclusiveness of cooperatives and POs. He is also an expert on contract farming arrangements and how these contribute to improving quality and sustainability.
He’s been supportive and lenient thus far. If desired, he can provide feedback if you need directions, although I suspect he won’t be able to answer very quickly at the moment.
Red text and square brackets
In my current version of the thesis, which I attached to my application, there is red text and [text between brackets]. The red text consists of feedback from my supervisor and contains important subjects that still need to be included. Usually, annotations in red is based on comments from my supervisor who tried to guide me in that direction, so these are most important.
Text between brackets are paragraphs that I felt were worth putting down but have not yet found a place in the section. Usually, in these cases I did not make my mind up how I was going to use the information. These paragraphs can be excluded or changed dramatically.
Basis of structure
The structure of the study follows the economic approaches to organizations as described in “Douma, S., & Schreuder, H. (2008). Economic approaches to organizations. Pearson Education.” (Book pdf file: shorturl.at/oyzB5). In the study I try to answer my research question by applying the Economic Approaches of the book’s Part 2.
The beginning of the middle part of the thesis starts with transaction costs economics, since the literature suggests that this is the most common approach to determine a well-suited organizational form for firms. I’ve extensively paraphrased an article that applies transaction cost economics to the U.S. bioethanol industry (Altman & Johnson, 2008), so not much else is required to be added for that part. I still need to work on putting it in my own words, but I plan on doing this after my resit exam.
The second and final part of the middle section should describe the managerial approach to economic organizational theory. I’ve made an attempt but was confronted with feedback stating that the paragraph did not follow the managerial approach (see thesis Word file for details).
In the eyes of my supervisor, the managerial part is required to give a holistic overview of organizational theory. He has told me that Agency Cost theory is suitable to basis for the managerial part and that it is an important component for answering the question. Information about the topic can be found in Douma & Schreuder (2008).
My supervisor has told me that, after the inclusion of the managerial part, the scope of the literature is sufficient to answer my research question. However, it needs tinkering and proper explanation why the study takes these approaches and not others.
Finally, the different approaches should be tied together with the aim to substantiate an answer to the research question based on the findings.
Evidently, the thesis should end with a discussion and conclusion. The abstract has yet to be written as well.
I hope the instructions are clear.
