Part I – Review
Please review chapter 16 & 17 of the textbook, as well as view the “Optional Resources” shared on Canvas relating to persuasion (under the “Course Information” module, with the Formal Speech #3 materials).
Part II – Find and Share
Find, and share the link to one persuasive speech (i.e. look to politics for debates/speeches, college-aged students giving persuasive speeches, etc.). Give a brief summary (and identify why you chose this speech) along with the link you share.
Part III – Analyze
Answer each of the following questions for your chosen speech (being sure to label each part of the assignment, too):
Identify the attention grabbing statement. Also, identify the road map (preview/thesis statement).
Is this speech’s thesis a question/proposition of policy, fact or value? Why? (See Lumen article on Canvas for more details on delineating between the three).
How does the speaker establish credibility? (I.e. what is your opinion of the initial credibility? derived credibility? terminal credibility?) Cite a specific example on how a speaker establishes each of these or doesn’t.
What types of motivation (i.e. positive, negative, etc.) is the speaker using? Identify the type of motivation used and provide at least two specific examples of the utilization of that particular motivation.
What types of evidence are used? Give three specific examples for each speech.
What type of reasoning is used? Identify, define and exemplify the reasoning used.
Which organizational pattern is this speaker using to organize her/his persuasive argument (Monroe’s motivated sequence, cause-effect, etc.)? Tell me why you think this is the pattern being used (i.e. what are key distinguishing features of this type of persuasive organization and how is it used here?).
How is the speech concluded? What call of action is being requested?
