Write an interaction paper addressing the following prompt:

In 1 Thessalonians 4-5, Paul offers pastoral counsel to the Thessalonian believers. Although Paul does not intend for these chapters to provide a systematic teaching of his eschatology, he grounds his directives in his eschatological beliefs.

Some scholars believe that 1 Thessalonians 4 and 5 offer evidence of Paul’s expectation that Jesus’ return (the parousia) would occur during Paul’s lifetime. Read 1 Thessalonians 4-5. Analyze only these chapters and determine how close Paul thought the end of the world (eschaton) was. In your response identify what you believe to be the three most significant verses/sentences that contribute information about when Paul expected the end time. Following your introductory paragraph with thesis statement, write one paragraph on each of these three, clearly stating what information is suggested by each verse/sentence you select and analyzing its implications. Then summarize in one paragraph your conclusions about Paul’s overall teaching on the time frame of the eschaton in this passage. In a final paragraph explain whether you believe Paul’s end time expectations uncovered in 1 Thessalonians 4-5 were right or wrong. The resulting interaction paper should have the following structure:

Paragraph 1: Introduction & Thesis Statement
Paragraphs 2-4: Content & Analysis of Verses/Sentences
Paragraph 5: Summary & Conclusion
Paragraph 6: Personal Assessment of Paul’s Eschatological Expectations

Note: This paper is not an exegetical paper intending to discover Paul’s intentions in 1 Thess 4-5. It is an analytical paper focused solely on determining whether or not these chapters contain information that suggests that Paul anticipated Jesus’ return within the lifetime of Paul and/or his Thessalonian audience.

How Long should it be?

The interaction paper should be 700-800 words in length.

How should I write?

Papers should be typed, double-spaced, and use 12 point Times New Roman font.

Interaction papers should concentrate on engagement with the primary text(s) and give evidence of critical thinking and integration. They are not intended to be journals or personal reflections, but must contain an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement and proceed to offer a clear argument from the text(s) at hand. As a formal, academic paper, the use of first person pronouns is not permitted.

Students must work from the New American Standard translation of the Bible for their interaction papers.

Research outside of the primary biblical texts is neither expected nor desired in order to complete the Interaction Papers, however students should be careful to present primary source support for all textual claims by means of parenthetical citations. It is almost always preferable to avoid direct quotations in such a short paper, instead paraphrasing and summarizing any verses as needed.
