Sociology of mental illness, Self Diagnosis

It can seem that almost anyone, in certain conditions, can be said to be suffering from some kind of “mental illness,” or SMAT. For the purposes of this assignment, you will be both the subject and the object of inquiry. In a 7-8 page double-spaced paper, please do the following:

Introduction
Describe yourself in detail, especially in terms of your “symptoms.” (about 1 page)
Diagnose yourself. Name your “disorder.” Your “disorder” should be something that you actually do, but that is not listed anywhere (such as in the DSM) as an actual diagnosable disorder. DO NOT WRITE ABOUT AN ACTUAL DISORDER. (Use what you know of DSM categories from your reader to “place” your disorder—for example, is it an affective or mood disorder, an anxiety disorder, a personality disorder?). Justify the diagnosis, in as much detail as possible. (about 1 page)
Discuss what may have been factors in both the cause of “mental illness” AND the cause of the diagnosis. (about 5 pages total) In this segment, consider the following factors:
Epidemiological factors, including socio-economic status, gender, race, etc. Cite pertinent studies. (about 2 pages)
Varying models of causation, including the biomedical/biopsychiatric model, stress model, and interactionist models. Describe precisely how each of these apply (or not) to your case. (about 2 pages)
The politics involved in using DSM. (about 1 page)
