You will record an independent verbal presentation using the video recorder function on your computer, tablet, video camera, or phone. Consider this a professional submission: think about camera placement, body language, verbal content, non-verbal communication, sound quality, your surroundings, and personal presentation. Be professional and confident in your presentation and its content.
Note: This is an individual assessment.
This assignment is designed to give you a chance to apply concepts you have learned in order to verbally present information in person via an independent video presentation.
It will help you achieve the following learning outcomes:
Learning outcome 1: Create, conduct and deliver efficient, informative written, verbal, and non-verbal communications in order to persuasively develop a targeted audience’s comprehension
Learning outcome 2: Anticipate audience needs and expectations and adapt behaviour to meet those needs, assessing and leveraging specialized vocabularies employed in specific business contexts (e.g. corporate, organizational, community benefit, intercultural)
Learning outcome 3: Apply course concepts and best practices to effectively research, plan, write and present information
Learning outcome 4: Cultivate professional credibility, self-awareness, situational adaptability and confidence
Learning outcome 5: Effectively create and implement different formats of business communication (e.g. reports, proposals, plans, routine messages)
Prepare a brief – a written outline that summarizes a recent article from the business section of a credible news source. The brief will capture your analysis of the implications of your chosen article for a specific business or organization. You will then deliver an oral presentation based on the content of that article. If you require additional information about the subject, research additional sources.
Consider your written brief and the presentation itself to be a critical summary of information that is needed by your audience. State the facts and provide your personal analysis of the implications this event will have for your audience’s business. Role-playing is encouraged: identify your proposed audience and identify your fictional role in sharing this information. (e.g. “As you may be aware, I am the Project Manager on [this project], and I’m pleased to share this information with each of you on [our company]’s Board of Directors.”) You should also establish the information’s context and relevancy to your audience’s business.

Video editing skills are not necessary for this assignment, but you are welcome to use video editing techniques if you are comfortable doing so.
Submit the video file to the appropriate CourseLink Dropbox folder as a YouTube link, along with a short, written outline of your briefing (saved as a PDF). Instructions on posting a video to YouTube (with privacy settings) and inserting the link to CourseLink are available on CourseLink under “resources.” Videos will not be viewed by anyone other than the course instructor and/or TAs without your clear consent.
Your video presentation should follow these specifications:
The video should be about four minutes
Carefully consider your audience and their information needs
Demonstrating professionalism is your primary goal
The associated written outline must be only one page in length
The written outline must be saved and submitted as a PDF to ensure proper formatting
Ensure the written outline is a briefing document, not a script that you read your presentation from
Technical skills (beyond the operation of equipment you already own) are not necessary, but additional creativity and production skills are strongly encouraged, and may positively influence your grade
