Write: Synthesize (combine) the ideas from your two sources into your own extended definition of the American dream. Present the text of your report in formal paragraph style: omit bulleted information, internal paragraph headings, etc. *Do not simply summarize the articles.* What does the American dream mean today? What is its significance in terms of immigration, multiculturalism, economics, education, etc., according to your sources?
Introduction Paragraph: Give concise and relevant background and state clearly and specifically your own new definition of the American dream in one sentence at the end of your Introduction paragraph; this will be your formal thesis sentence.
Body Paragraphs: In each Body paragraph, combine ideas from your two sources and cite their key ideas to develop your thesis: your new and interesting definition of the American dream, today. Do not discuss only one source per paragraph, as this would mean you are summarizing the source ideas, which is inappropriate for this report. Discuss cited ideas from both sources in each Body paragraph and omit your own personal opinions.
Citations: Cite with MLA-style in-text citations and bibliographic citations all information that you present in support of your thesis. Other research styles, such as APA, are ineligible for course credit.
Development: Omit your own personal opinions about the issues, and avoid talking about yourself or your experiences. Focus solely on synthesizing (comparing and contrasting) cited source ideas in each Body paragraph.
Conclusion Paragraph: In your Conclusion, identify your two specific sources by author or, for anonymous sources, article title in quotation marks, and wrap up your overall discussion of their ideas as synthesized in your Body paragraphs.
Your essay should contain 1-2 quotations from your sources, no more and no less; each quotation should be no longer than 1-2 sentences. Include cited paraphrases of other source ideas. Be sure to use quotation marks and MLA in-text citations appropriately and responsibly, and include an MLA-style Works Cited page on a new page at the end of your report.
Your essay text should be 650-750 words, no more and no less. Report length always excludes headers and Works Cited page.
Format your essay in MLA Style and include an MLA-style Works Cited page. Need help with MLA? Refer to the CCCOnline MLA Citation Toolkit. And consult the Purdue OWL for more information MLA General Format (page layout) and how to create a correctly formatted MLA Works Cited page.
Once your essay is written, revised, and proofread, submit it to the Module 1 Assignment folder: Research Synthesis Essay. Submit your report saved in MS Word in the .doc or .docx file format; if you do not have MS Word, save your report in the .pdf file format. Use no other file formats, so your report is compatible with the functions of the Assignments dropbox and can be assessed for course credit.
