For this essay, you’ll need to write 500-750 words on only the following prompts. Please use the MLA template included in this week’s Module and in the “Files” section of the class in order to format your paper properly.
— Examine either “Daddy” or “The Secretary Chant” with a feminist critical eye. You may look at the poems as art or at the authors as artists. What does the work reveal about the operations (economically, politically, socially, or psychologically) of patriarchy? What role do the female speakers take in comparison to the male objects considered? What does the history of the work’s reception by the public and by the critics tell us about the operation of patriarchy (research what/how these poems express the authors’ feminism)? How do these works fit with the concept of feminist writing? Again, these questions may just get you started with creating a position.
Remember, when writing about literature, use quality evidence directly from the texts to support an argumentative thesis in order to persuade your readers. Make sure you use literary terms correctly and be sure you proofread your work. Additionally, you must find additional support using the databases from Valencia’s online library system. Remember that you need to cite properly the primary text you use for this paper and any secondary sources you find using MLA citation style (both in-text and Works Cited).

This paragraph is an example of a paper written in the MLA (Modern Language Association) format. Note that the first line of each paragraph is INDENTED 5 spaces (the easiest way to do this is to press <tab> one time), and ALL lines are double-spaced [go to Format/Paragraph/Line Spacing]). The general rule on including information from other sources is use as little as possible to make your point. If you include a direct quotation of up to four lines, you must introduce the information in a logical manner and use “quotation marks” and a parenthetical notation at the end of the sentence attributing the author and pages (Author 123-4). If you quote more than four lines you must align the text in a block with everything indented TEN spaces, as shown:
Remember: All text-only documents should be saved as .doc or .docx (Microsoft Word format). Presentations, slides, and pictures are best saved as .pptx–PowerPoint if possible. Always bring in a printed, stapled copy unless otherwise instructed. If for some reason you cannot bring in your paper (if you miss class for example), an e-mailed copy of your paper may be submitted. Check with the instructor first.
You will ALMOST NEVER do this for papers of 1,000 words or less; exceptions might include a stanza from a poem or an important section from a speech.
Less than 25% of your total paper should be pulled directly from other sources (quotes OR paraphrases). The best way to make sure you create original work is to read several sources, take brief notes from each one, and then write your paper from these notes. This helps stop you from copying “almost directly” from your sources.
REMEMBER! If you think you MIGHT be plagiarizing, ASK the instructor BEFORE turning in a paper (and it is a good idea to have the teacher write a note on the paper about what was discussed – better safe than sorry). AT BEST, plagiarized papers receive a grade of ZERO; AT WORST, students may be expelled from the school.
