To Kill A Mockingbird Paper Assignment:
English 3 Students
Start with an introduction that presents the novel and author.
The introduction must have a statement of theme chosen from your list of topics for To Kill A Mockingbird.
That theme will be explained/defined in the introduction so that the grader will have no problem understanding Harper Lee’s (and paper writer’s) intention in making this generalization about mankind or human nature.
Introduction will end with some kind of transitional statement, ie. “The author manipulates setting, narration, character, conflict… to create his theme.”
The body paragraphs will analyze the author’s use of any of the elements of literature (character, setting, narration, any element or elements of plot, symbolism, irony, etc.) as it relates to and creates the theme of the story. At minimum body paragraphs should include:
1. Topic sentence.
2. Introduce the evidence.
3. Present the evidence (in the case of literature this will always appear in the form of a direct quote from the literature).
4. At least two or three sentences that explain what this quote/topic has to do with the author’s theme.
5. Same as 4.
6. Conclusion/Transition sentence.
The conclusion paragraph will evaluate theme without the use of “I” or “I think.” In other words, the student will make a statement like, “The reader recognizes the validity of Harper Lee’s view of mankind because in the world we live in today…” or, “The reader sees that the author’s view no longer applies to the world we live in today because…” This is where the student has the opportunity to apply their thinking to the novel, but without the use of the word “I.”
This paper will be graded on the content and logic of the students’ presentation as well as the organization of the paper and the basic grammar and mechanics of the writing. Papers that follow the minimum guidelines above will receive grades in the low “B” range. Papers that follow the guidelines and show reflection and accurate critical analysis in the body will receive grades in the “A” range.
Papers turned in on time will have the opportunity to rewrite for better grades.
