The progressive movement arose primarily as a response to the problems created by industrialization. Now, because of COVID-19, the inequities of our society today have been exposed. People are for more likely to contract, suffer, and even die from COVID if they are poor, or non-white. Women are more likely to have lost their jobs than men. Amongst all other advanced nations in the world, the U.S. has more deaths from COVID-19 than any other nation. Why? Do we need a new, modern progressive movement to address the problems exposed by COVID-19? Does the U.S. work equally for everyone, or do some Americans fare better than others due to factors beyond their control like their race, age, or gender? Why or why not? Hint: Think about what people like Samuel Gompers, Andrew Carnegie, or Jacob Riis would think about these issues. What about a Social Darwinist like William Graham Sumner? You should also even consider the view of American expansionists like Josiah Strong, or monopoly busters like Theodore Roosevelt. You should also consider the Progressive Party platform.
