Critical Thinking Question:
Gayle is the mother of Jana, a student in your class who sometimes comes to school in the same clothes she wore the day before. She is tired and irritable, so sometimes on these days you get her something to eat and then find her a place to rest for an hour or so. You’ve found Jana has far fewer conflicts with students and staff when she’s fed and rested. You suspect that spousal abuse in the home keeps Jana up late at night. Gayle comes in after school one day and wants to know why you are letting her daughter sleep at school when she should be doing schoolwork. Explain “Brain States” with Gayle and how Jana is probably affected by these states. Also discuss childhood trauma and how this might be negatively affecting Jana’s school behavior and performance.
