Remember persuasion occurs when you ethically organize your communication to influence the attitudes, behaviors, and choices of an audience. Your role in this speech is that of an advocate, thus you move beyond informing your audience to persuading them to think and/or act in preferred ways. Refer to chapters 14 and 15 for additional information regarding speaking to persuade.

Remember facts persuade, NOT opinions. It is crucial that you provide documentation throughout this speech.


You must use extemporaneous delivery by using notecards. (Do not deliver the speech from a manuscript, nor memorize the entire speech.)

Early in the speech, you must give the audience a reason to listen to the speech. Take time to analyze your audience, work to engage them in your speech. (Chapter 4)

Establish credibility (Initial, Derived and Terminal) To be credible you should be perceived as competent, trustworthy and dynamic. (Chapter 15)

While still focusing on organization, in this speech you should give special attention to the arguments you use, according to readings and learning activities. Develop well-reasoned arguments structured in a rational way. Provide evidence to support a claim and apply strategies for using evidence effectively. (Chapter 15)

You must answer the ever present question, “How do you know?” by citing your sources orally in your speech. Example: “Newsweek of this week states that . . . ”

You must use five (5) sources of information other than yourself for this speech, typed in a bibliography, using either MLA (Modern Languages Association) or APA (American Psychological Association) stylebooks. You must orally cite 4 out of your 5 sources during your speech.
