Paper – Marketing of Youth TV

Please write a 3-5 page paper that provides a comparative formal analysis of two television episodes from class. This short essay should consider how these shows address youth audiences or construct images of American youths through their styles, characterizations, genre orientations and/or branding strategies. I would recommend selecting episodes that we have viewed together, but you may opt to engage other episodes of these same programs (for instance, an installment of The Mod Squad aside from “The Guru”) as long as you have access via your own technologies. Pose a clear and complex argument about how these programs aesthetically (via devices of cinematography/camerawork, mise en scène, editing, sound) and narratively (story, writing/dialogue, industrial management, advertising structure, etc.) construct perceptions of young people for American consumers and/or hail children, adolescents, teenagers, and/or young adults through marketing appeals. Please focus on the episodes themselves and make your claim specific/manageable for the purposes of a short paper. Try to locate similarity within difference and/or difference within similarity when conducting your analysis – the shows will likely never be entirely opposed or entirely aligned in their ideological addresses, aesthetic compositions, or narrative sensibilities. Please cite a minimum of three class readings to support your argument.

Hopalong Cassidy, “The Feud”; Disneyland, “Davy Crockett, Indian Fighter”
