Essay One: Argument
In approximately 750 words, argue as logically and as persuasively as you can for or against one of the following:
· Examine the slogan, “Defund the police.” Should the U. S. defund the police? Why or why not? Explain.
· Should armed citizens, whether they are acting alone or as part of a militia, be allowed to police protests and demonstrations, or should they be arrested and taken into custody? Explain.
· Should statues and monuments be taken down or destroyed if they offend certain groups of people? For instance, should Confederate statues be removed, or should they remain standing? Why or why not?
To write an effective argument, you will need to consider both sides of the issue. Do not ignore your opposition. In the pre-writing stage, try to use a Rogerian strategy and develop a thesis statement that is a complex sentence, expressing your main point in the independent clause and your opposition’s opinion in the subordinate clause. Avoid logical fallacies. Imagine that your audience consists of students, faculty, staff, and community leaders. Also, imagine that some of your readers would be open to your proposed change, but others would be hostile to it.
Although this is not a research paper per se, if you borrow any ideas, statistics, quotations, etc. from sources, you must document that borrowed material with in-text, parenthetical citations plus entries on a works-cited page at the end. Use the MLA style of documentation.
Your argument, which must be neatly typed, double spaced, using size 12 font, and one-inch margins. Everything must be typed in the same font size and style, including the heading and the title.
You will be graded on content, organization, logic, audience awareness, sentence structure, word choice, spelling, grammar, and format.
