Objective: Think more broadly about research methods and the claims that can be made from their findings.

Original Post Due Friday 02/05 by 11:59 PM.

For this assignment your task is to think a bit more deeply about research methods and the types of claims you can make from different research designs. You will be asked to apply your understanding of correlational and causal research studies while critically evaluating the accuracy of news headlines.

Headline 1: Low self-esteem shrinks brain

Headline 2: Early language skills reduce preschool tantrums, study finds
(Links to an external site.)

Headline 3: Straight A’s in high school may mean better health later in life,8599,2036232,00.html?xid=huffpo-direct
(Links to an external site.)

Headline 4: Sugar Rush… to prison? Study Says Lots of Candy Could Lead to Violence
(Links to an external site.)

Discussion credit (4 points):

In your own words, please describe what a confounding variable is. How do we avoid confounding variables in research?
In your own words, explain.
What is the purpose of correlational research?
What is the purpose of experimental research?
What statement does an experiment allow you to make that a correlational study design does not (recall that correlation does not equal causation)?
Describe 4 words that might be used in a headline about a correlational research study (e.g., related to).
Describe 4 words that might be used in a headline about an experimental research study (e.g., causes).

Extra Credit (up to 4 points):

Pick two headlines from those listed above. For each headline separately, identify whether the language used in the headline is either making a causal or a correlational claim. Be sure to explain why you think it is causal or correlational.
Click the link underneath the headline and read the actual news report. Do the research methods/ the research study described in the news report adequately support the type of claim made in the headline? For example, if causal language was used, did the researchers actually run an experiment (with different groups, manipulating a variable and holding another variable constant) or did they just look at the correlation between two variables? Be sure to support your argument with sufficient explanation.
Unfortunately, most people just read the news headlines without reading the associated research article about the study that was conducted. Why might misleading headlines be problematic?
