English

Students will write a comparison essay using two or more texts that we’ve read or viewed over the course of the term (including poems, short stories, films/documentaries, and novels). A comparison essay can look at similarities between texts, differences between texts, or some combination of both.

The essay must include a title, introduction with a thesis statement, body paragraphs with evidence/quotations from the primary texts, conclusion, and Works Cited page in MLA style. Research is not required for this essay, but if you use secondary sources, please cite them.

TOPICS TO CHOOSE FROM:

Compare any TWO or more characters from any of the course texts and discuss how they are similar and/or different.
Ex. Doc Hata from A Gesture Life and Vladek Spiegelman from Maus both experience trauma during WWII, which is evident in the following ways: . . . .
Ex. Both Robert Ross and Jimmy Cross share characteristics that make them vulnerable in the war: namely, both men are young, ______ and __________.
Another option for your comparison essay is to find a common theme or idea that is evident in two or more of the course texts. Build a thesis around a common theme: Ex. PTSD, Loss of Innocence, Sexual Violence, Gender Stereotypes, Toxic Masculinity, etc.

Ex. Both War Porn by Roy Scranton and A Gesture Life by Chang-rae Lee expose how sexual violence is prevalent during wartime.

Ex. Both The Wars by Timothy Findley and “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien depict how soldiers are physically and mentally altered by war.

Ex. Many authors represent how women are sexually exploited in the military system. This is shown in Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket and Lee’s A Gesture Life.
