Case Study of Organizational Leadership

I have supplied a rough outline for the following paper in the uploaded files. (I understand there may be very little online in regards to how ATTC is organized. You have my permission to get creative and invent an organization and leadership structure based on the organizational leadership description.)

Observing leadership in action is essential for a deeper understanding of what works and what doesn’t when applied in organizations. As you read and discuss ideas about leadership, plan to research, write, and present a paper about an organization you’ve worked for as an anthropologist or consultant might—by trying to understand the underlying beliefs, values, and assumptions of that organizational culture. Pay attention to those who have assumed leadership roles, formal or informal, in the organization and their use of power, influence, and strategic moves. As you continue to observe that organization, identify its most salient leadership challenges and develop one or more strategies to address those leadership challenges.
Selecting your current or most recent organization may be easiest to study as you’ll have the most access to (and best recollection of) its people and activities. While the written case studies will be kept confidential, please consult with your instructor if you have privacy concerns.

The case study paper, assigned in place of a final exam, should masterfully demonstrate what you’ve learned about leadership and organizational culture throughout the semester. To do that:
• First, develop your overarching leadership-related concepts/theories relevant to your chosen organization and explain those ideas using authoritative and academic references. Use only two or three overarching “big ideas” (e.g., motivation, teamwork).

• Second, explain how your observations about leadership challenges and recommendations fit into those overarching ideas, again using authoritative and academic references. Ask yourself whether your most demanding boss would be persuaded by your argument and the amount and quality of your evidence.
Follow the organizational structure below for your paper.

The completed case study should have the following SEVEN sections, all clearly marked with headings throughout the paper:

(1) an EXECUTIVE SUMMARY (no more than one page) at the beginning of the paper. The executive summary should include the name and description of the organization; a list of the major leadership challenges you have identified; and a summary of your recommendations;
(2) a short (no more than two pages) OVERALL DESCRIPTION of the organization, its primary activities, and cast of characters most directly relevant to your analysis;
(3) an extended explanation of the LEADERSHIP AND ORGANIZATIONAL THEORIES/CONCEPT(S) you used for your analysis and recommendations, supported by multiple authoritative and academic sources;
(4) an analysis of the organization’s MAIN LEADERSHIP CHALLENGES (integrate the concepts/theories you’ve used in #3 to show how they explain/reinforce the mechanisms at work in the organization and its leadership);
(5) your explanation of how your RECOMMENDATIONS can meet those leadership challenges, again integrating authoritative and academic sources as evidence to support your argument. Be explicit about how each recommendation directly addresses each identified challenge;

(6) a final section on LESSONS YOU’VE LEARNED from the case study and what you could apply to your own leadership development; and

(7) a REFERENCE PAGE that compiles all the sources used to support your analysis and recommendations.
• The case study should be 15 to 20 double-spaced pages (excluding references and appendix pages) and supported by at least 10 relevant authoritative and academic references that back up your observations and insights. No more than five of the references can be from the assigned readings for this course. Only references that you specifically incorporate in the paper’s text should be listed in the final reference page.

• APA citation style is preferred, where the author’s name and publication date are included in parentheses within the text. (Note: You may use another citation style as long as you’re consistent throughout the paper.) Be sure to correctly cite all data, quotes, personal interviews, and academic books and articles within the text as well as in the reference page at the end. If in doubt about whether to cite a reference, cite it!

• Class Presentation: To accompany the presentation of your case study in Week 14, prepare one PowerPoint slide that includes: (1) a short description of the organization and leadership; (2) the leadership challenges; (3) your recommendations for improvement, and (4) the theories/concepts you used to explain those challenges and recommendations.

• Grading: Your case study will be evaluated according to depth of insight, clarity, organization, and creativity. Remember that this paper, which replaces a final exam, should demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the leadership and organizational concepts discussed during the semester. Especially important to your grade will be how well you incorporate and apply those concepts; your analysis of the organization’s leadership issues; the quality of your recommendations; and the depth of your authoritative and academic evidence to support your ideas.
