Return to the assignment for the initial “Writing Assessment” from the beginning of the semester, (here, we talked about what positive changes we expect as college students). You have now nearly finished a semester of college (though an admittedly odd one), and it is time to respond again to that first assignment, as well as that first piece of writing you did for this class, and to connect your thinking to other people’s thoughts and ideas—to enter a larger conversation about the value of this “education” you have chosen to pursue. To this end, you will not MERELY write a new version of that earlier paper; however, as you start to write this new paper, you should NOT look at the earlier version of your response from the beginning of the semester. Not yet.
Instead, you will first write a new response to the assignment, responding as your current self, with all of the experience of this semester available to you. You will make a carefully focused a claim, and support that claim by incorporating research drawn (1) from four to six authoritative print and/or internet sources, and (2) from interviews with at least two fellow college students. We will talk in class about how to conduct an interview. Often people are the best and most immediate source of information.
Only then, AFTER you have written your new response to that initial assignment, including your research into authoritative sources and interviews with fellow students, go back and re-read your initial response, and address the following: in that original response, what was your argument? Summarize it. How is the new argument you’ve written different? What do you still agree with? Disagree with? How and why? And what do you conclude from the change, or from the lack of change? In that conclusion you may incorporate some of your research.
Remember: Do not use any cliches, be more specific.
