In Henrik Ibsen’s play A Doll’s House, Nora is gentle and kind wife. She loves her family. The play starts in a very warm and peaceful family atmosphere. On the eve of Christmas, Nora is carefully prepared for the holiday. And Helmer, her husband intimately calls Nora “Little Squirrel”. Helmer says “Is it my little squirrel bustling about? When did my squirrel come home?” (Act I:Scene). The husband seems to be very fond of Nora, making me feel Nora is living a happy family life. But when the plot progresses, I understand that Nora has been alone in a huge debt for eight years. Nora is a good woman. In the face of family financial setbacks, she is taking her responsibility and trying her best to protect her family with her strength. However, in the eyes of her husband, Nora is only a doll in the house. Her only role at family is just a wife and mother Helmer desires her to be. Her thoughts and opinions are not important to him. He simply does not care what she feels and says. Helmer says “Before all else, you are a wife and a mother.” Therefore, the conflicts between this two finally explode in the Act III which reaches the climax of the plot. In the end, Nora speaks out her mind about the family situation and her husband. Nora says “Torvald—it was then it dawned upon me that for eight years I had been living here with a strange man, and had borne him three children—. Oh, I can’t bear to think of it! I could tear myself into little bits!” (Act III: Scene). To me, it is not a sudden explosion of Nora’s feeling. It is the feeling built up for years. Nora hopes before but the miracle does not arrive. She is so disappointed when her husband is completely confrontational and accusing her. Helmer can not understand Nora’s intentions and does not even have any gratitude for her. Helmer says “Oh, you think and talk like a heedless child.”(Act III: Scene). With the despair of love and a painful process she goes through, Nora decides to leave her husband. Her departure marks her self-awakening.
