Using the articles you are planning to use in your Literature Review (10-15), review the “funnel method” as a technique for sorting materials within each category. You may wish to sort a category starting from the broadest theoretical approach.

Then, look online or from the library for articles that detail how companies in any industry have identified and dealt with a problem similar to yours. You should be looking for answers to some of the following questions:

How did the company identify the problem?
What was the impact on their business?
What changes did the company wish to make?
How did the company deal with the problem?
What were the outcomes?
Could my company use any of the techniques that were successful?
The second sort of all of the materials may yield similar information from companies within your own industry. You should again be asking yourself the questions listed above.

The third level of the funnel involves materials that will assist you in looking inside your own company. You will need to identify whether or not similar problems are occurring across the company in areas other than your own area. You should be able to ask themselves:

How do I know that these problems are present in other areas?
Has my company identified ways in which the key problem is being dealt with?
What is working and what is not?
The final level of the funnel involves your principal work area. You must ask yourself:

How did I identify the problem?
How is it impacting my work area?
How is it impacting the company?
Is the problem unique to my area?
Has the company recognized the problem and addressed its uniqueness?
Are there viable business solutions to the student’s concerns?
Have other business divisions of the company found workable solutions?
Will any of them work in my work area? If so, why? If not, why not?
What different and viable solutions that have been tried in other companies have been identified?
What solutions would I recommend for my work area?
After performing the 4 physical sort activities described above, post your answers in a summary fashion only to the bulleted points in this Organizing the Collected Literature Assignment.
