Urban and social geography is saturated with promotional culture and structured around commodity relations. Brands often create space and offer experiences that reproduce their values and mythologies in addition to simply displaying their products. Some brands create anti-brand spaces and experiences. In this paper, you will explore a physical or virtual space that most interests you. It could be a park, a spectacle like music or art show (if possible); a shopping mall, a gallery, a favourite (or least favourite) retail space, a street, a district, a home, or a virtual space. First part Visuals: (For this part make around 8 slides worksheet) Take six photos of this space (or screen grabs if it is online space). Draw/create some kind of “map” of the space to visualize spatial layout, structure and design; you can be creative as you like (see field note worksheet). Importantly, consider how the images that you capture/choose from online and create express the particular layout, tone and meaning of the promotional geographies that you explore. Your images must have captions, 1-2 short sentences that describe the image. For this part make around 8 slides. Second part Text: (For this part write around 1000 words) The primary text should describe the way social relations of consumption are produced and operate spatially. Use these visuals to create an argument about the way in which advertising, promotional culture and social relations of consumption structure one’s experience of this site. Try to connect spatial form and structure and the experience of space to: • values, • mythologies, • identities, • practices, • social relationships, • or anything else that is relevant. The primary text (not including captions) should be 1000 words. The paper must have a minimum 3 scholarly sources, with a minimum of 2 coming from the course itself (all 4 can be from the course).
