I hope this proves to be an exercise that is stimulating and a full integration of what you have learned. I would like you to discuss someone (child, adolescent, or adult) from your life, pop culture, literature or of your own creation who exhibits psychopathology that we discussed this semester. If writing is a great challenge to you, I urge you to spend extra time proofreading and editing until your paper is coherent. In terms of content, I expect several things.
Background information of person/client
Diagnosis and be specific as to what symptoms that he/she shows
Differential Diagnosis: what else did you consider and why did you rule this out?
At least five theories discussed in class that enhance your perspective/explain WHY they would be diagnosed this way. As an example, anxiety has a biological and an environmental learning theory behind it’s development. May want to discuss these theories (briefly and with 3 others) and how they explain the d/o.
Treatment Plan: what would be the goals and what does the research say works for this population/presenting problem/diagnosis. Give at least 2 examples of HOW this treatment approach would work. As an example: Cognitive Therapy (Beck, 1999) has been shown to be effective in the treatment of depression among adults. The approach would look at challenging specific automatic thoughts the client may have that leads them to be depressed. For example, “my life is terrible and no one cares for me and no matter what I do things will not improve”. A clinician would work on changing these thoughts to more realistic/healthy/adaptive ones.
