Analysis of how literature and literary theory relates to a specific discipline
Here are the instructions my teacher has provided:
Write an essay of 8 pages or more that engages some element or elements of literary theory with the discipline of your choice. By discipline, we mean here–in more general categories–either the humanities, or the social sciences, or the physical sciences. If you would like to break down a category into a smaller unit, you may do so, for example, by focusing on a sub-discipline such as sociology, or psychology, or history, etc., in the social sciences; by the same token, you could focus on chemistry, or biology, or mathematics, etc., in the physical sciences. In the humanities, one could focus on communications or foreign languages, etc.
To engage some element in this analysis, begin by researching how literature or the literary is in some way related to, affected by, or affects something in the discipline upon which you choose to focus. Consider beginning quite broadly in your search, but eventually, begin to narrow your research to a select effect that seems to be of the highest concern. As you gather your research, begin to develop your own take on this issue, then organize your research in outline in relation to your own thinking: how does the research I have chosen figure this effect, and then how do I situate myself in relation to these arguments about the effect.
The goal of this essay, in the end, is to situate yourself in relation to the discipline of your choice and to be able to explain how literature or the literary has an impact–either in theory or in practice–on the discipline.
My teacher requested 5 academic-based sources and a reference page. MLA style. Feel free to use whatever discipline/subject you are most comfortable with. I was thinking of psychology as the discipline, but whatever works. My teacher recommends Googling:
“What do literary studies have to do with _____” and finding the articles that are academically based.
