Chapter 9 Assignment:
Family Violence Reflection Essay
This essay is going to be your reflection of the material covered in Chapter 9 (the text book as well as the power point).
There are 2 parts to this essay (with sub-parts to each). Review the entire Ch 9 PowerPoint and all videos contained in it. You may incorporate and reference any video, but be sure to specifically address the videos I reference below.
Part One: The Rediscovery Process, Intimate Partner Violence Today, Why Women Don’t Leave
A. Discuss and explain the Rediscovery of domestic violence (“wife beating”) and scope of the problem in the past as well as today. Specifically explain the term Intimate Partner Violence (how and why this term came about).
B. Discuss and explain the victim-blaming versus victim-defending view with regard to this issue.
Include the cycle of violence (3 phases) and the accompanying “learned helplessness”/Battered Women’s Syndrome that occurs in these domestic violence situation.
C. Explain the warning signs and discuss the reasons women don’t leave
Specifically address the following video shown in class: Leslie Morgan Steiner: Why domestic violence victims don’t leave.

– Be the Hero – Patrick Stewart (Men: it is in our hands to stop violence)
A. Discuss and explain what Jackson Katz meant when he said domestic violence is not just a woman’s issue. Why is this also a man’s issue (why is this everyone’s issue)? (please note the answer is not that men can also be victims of IPV – while this is certainly true – this is not the point of Jackson Katz’s TedTalk. You must watch the video in order to answer this question. See Video below). How does Patrick Stewart’s video contribute to this?
B. Culture

After watching the videos, discuss and explain the culture/socialization process we have that encourages and promotes the cultural violence against women (and the silence of others – who do not step up to stop it)
