Examine Ibsen’s “A Doll House,” focusing on the way in which the playwright dramatizes the interconnection between the internal and the external. To what extent are the main characters of the work able to establish a balance between internal and external selves, and why does that matter? How important is the concept of individuality in defining each character’s response to his/her situation? What internal changes does each character undergo throughout the work, and to what extent does the author validate, or criticize, those changes? Does the context of the work affect its point? Why or why not? How does Ibsen use dramatic irony to develop this concept, and how does that prepare readers for the ending of the work? What is the overall point of the play, and how does the author structure the work around this concept of internal/external as a way of dramatizing that point?
These questions are intended as guidelines, not as strict requirements, so do not try too hard to answer every one of them in the order in which they are presented. You can assume that your reader is familiar with the work, so you do not need to summarize it; you should, however, incorporate textual references and citations to support your argument, making sure to use correct MLA format. Remember that your assignment is to analyze the work, not to respond to it in a personal way.
Please do not do research for your paper; I am interested in your analysis, not that of the critics/experts. As I note in the policy statement for this class, the rules of academic honesty apply in all contexts, including this paper, and because I am asking you not to include the ideas of others (even if you change the wording) in this assignment, you need to follow the guidelines. If you copy and paste from an online source without acknowledging that you are doing so, you are plagiarizing and will fail this course.
