The Death Penalty is a highly controversial form of punishment and is only used in certain states within the United States and in certain countries around the globe. Choose on of the following prompts for this week’s assignment: 1. Here in the US, how do you think a person’s race, socioeconomic status, and gender impact the individual receiving a capital sentence? You must support this with facts; it is not sufficient to simply say how you feel. Do you think these factors influence offenders in the same way in other countries? Why or why not? 2. Identify an offender on the list of people that have been exonerated after being sentenced to death and/or executed. Give the particulars of their case and what led to their exoneration. Should a convicted person be able to choose the Death Penalty? Why or why not?
2.UN Treatment of Prisoners
This week, you have a choice of topic: 1. Write about the 3 breaches of prisoners’ rights in International Law by the United States (Guantanamo Bay, Afghanistan, and Iraq) What, if anything has been done to rectify these breaches? 2. Identify a country that is a member of the United Nations, but does not treat its prisoners well. Which components of the “minimum Standards” document are being violated, and how can the UN enforce its policies for Minimum Standard of Treatment?
3.Japan Prison System
Discuss some of the similarities and differences between the United States and Japan’s prison systems. Use the resources provided to cite specific data points, as they relate to assaults, escapes, etc. Use the Prison Law Reform article that is posted in the Class Materials section as a reference to discuss how and why reforms took place in Japan’s system. Do we see the same things happening in the US, and if so, what specifically? Which system seems to be “better” and why?
Please use the information you have reviewed form this week to compare/contrast the prison systems in Denmark/Brazil with that of the United States. What are we doing better than these countries, and what category are we not doing as well? Could Denmark’s system work in the US? Why or why not?
