Length: 400-500 words
Write a brief evaluative text about a contemporary artwork you have viewed in situ (in a museum/gallery exhibition or a work of outdoor public art) — 2 pages maximum.
You may choose a work in any medium from the year 2010 up to today.
The aim of this assignment is to carefully assess the artwork’s strengths and weaknesses and formulate a persuasive argument that incorporates your personal response to the work and your own judgment or opinion as to its qualities/merits.
Do not research other reviews/critiques of your artwork.
Your evaluation should not be based on the published opinions of art critics/historians, but on an informed observation of the work and your own judgment of taste/value, etc. Select an artwork that makes an impression on you (positive or negative), outline your criteria for judging its relative merits and substantiate your argument through a careful analysis of the work.
YOU MUST INCLUDE AN IMAGE OF YOUR ARTWORK
Place the image at the end of your text on a separate page.
Include the following information:
-Title of work
(Optional: dimensions, location, collection and/or exhibition)
-Indicate to the reader your overall response to and/or judgment of the artwork immediately at the beginning of your piece, then carefully explain your opinion of the work so that it might be valid for other viewers as well. Give examples.
-Avoid exceedingly harsh criticism and pejorative language, as well as excessive praise and uncritical affirmation of the artwork/artist. *Nuance your statements*
