In Between the World and Me, Ta-Nehisi Coates writes a letter to his son, a letter he names after a poem by Richard Wright, which is in part quoted in the beginning of the text. This poem, by the same title, is about a Black person who happens to be walking in the woods, and as he walks he comes across the brutal scene of the burnt corpse of someone who was lynched. It reads as follows:

And one morning while in the woods I stumbled suddenly upon the thing,

Stumbled upon it in a grassy clearing guarded by scaly oaks and elms

And the sooty details of the scene rose,

thrusting themselves between the world and me….

So this book, a long letter, is his legacy to his son. It is an expression of his love for his son as a father, but also an expression of fear, anger, and sadness about being a father. In this letter, Coates imparts his wisdom about how to live—to survive—in a racist country.

For paper assignment #3, you will write a letter to your hypothetical daughter or son. This will be your legacy. In it, you will try to impart all your knowledge and wisdom to your hypothetical child who you love more than anyone in the world. In this letter, you need to:

offer an explanation for how it is that you are leaving her/him a world so seemingly determined by this country’s history of racist violence (use Wilkerson). Use some of the metaphors that Wilkerson uses: “afterlife of pathogens,” “An old house,” “a long running play,” etc.;
discuss the police shooting/killing of various Black men and women and how this is shaping the world today;
offer guidance about how to live in the world as a particularly situated racial subject;
discuss what you have done, are doing, plan to do to bring about a more socially just world; and
explain what kind of world you hope for and what kind of person you wish your child to be in the world.

Obviously, this is an exercise on race and racism, so you need to specifically address this issue. Please cite relevant articles from section II. Do not use academic content from outside the course. Bibliography required. 3 pages, standard format.
