Rhetorical Analysis Thesis Statement
Your thesis for the rhetorical analysis should be answering these questions: Does the speech convince the audience of the message? If so, how? If not, why not?
Jeanne P. Baptiste’s Speech “A People, a Planet, a Presidency at Stake: Why You Must Vote for Me,” conveys effectively her message that she is the best candidate for the presidency of the USA. She is persuasive that she will tackle immigration, work harder for the poor, and protect our planet because she uses autobiography, alliteration, and parallelism very effectively.
Note: You will probably come up with many reasons/categories of analysis for how the text is effective or not. Do not include all of them. Choose the three or four best reasons and focus on those. It is better, like Clark, to focus on a few reasons in depth than to discuss many reasons briefly or loosely.
Format: Times New Roman (or similar), 12-pt. Font, 1-inch margins, 2.0 spaced,
(No additional spacing between MLA heading and title or title and essay text; same font as rest of text; no Underline, no Bold, No Italics, capitalize only the first letter of each word except prepositions and articles that do not begin your title.
An intro paragraph that introduces and summarizes the text, including author’s full name and title of the reading in quotation marks.
Body paragraphs: Each reason you do or do not find the rhetorical argument to be effective should be a topic sentence and be developed in at least one paragraph worth of discussion, but fully support your reasons. Most likely it would take at least two paragraphs to fully discuss a reason, so do not restrict yourself.
A conclusion paragraph that reinforces your main claim about the text’s effectiveness.
