Task: First, select a topic from the list below. Next, using scholarly research databases (e.g., SJSU One Search), locate at least 6 different peer-reviewed research articles that describe an empirical study on your topic. Overall, your articles should reflect the same topic across different developmental periods from early childhood through adolescence/young adulthood. Articles should be published between 2000 – present.

 

Topics – If there is a topic you want to pursue that is not on the list, please speak with your instructor and receive their approval for your proposed topic before starting the assignment.

Identity development – focus on a type of identity domain (e.g., gender, ethnicity)
Family relationships – focus on an aspect of family relationships (e.g., parent-child conflict, attachment, sibling relationships)
Friendship or peer likability
Aggression – focus on a type of aggression (e.g., physical aggression)
Moral development – altruism, empathy, pro-social behavior or lying
School engagement or achievement
Media – focus on a type of media (e.g., television, music, internet-based media)

 

Objectives: There are three objectives for this paper assignment.

Describe how your topic manifests itself from early childhood to adolescence/young adulthood.
Discuss contextual factors that shape children’s/adolescent’s development related to your topic.
Discuss how your topic contributes to important developmental outcomes.

 

Content of the Paper:

 

A. Introduction (~ ½ page):

Introduce your topic and explain why your topic is important and should be looked at developmentally. Support your statements with your research articles or textbook.
Provide a brief overview of the paper, including the objectives for your paper.

B. Body of the paper (5-6 pages):

Describe how your topic is manifested during early childhood through young adulthood. What are the major developmental milestones that impact your topic during the different developmental periods. What are the key characteristics and/or behaviors related to your topic.(Example: If your topic is on gender identity, what are children’s conceptions about their gender during this developmental period? This shouldn’t be about the outcomes but rather developmental factors that could impact your topic.
Discuss how the contextual factors of gender and ethnicity impact your topic . What is 1 other contextual factors that have a significant impact your topic? Use at least 2 articles for each contextual factor overview.
Discuss how your topic contributes to children’s social and/or emotional development. Discuss the main findings of your 6 articles at the different times of development and organize your responses by developmental period.

C. Conclusion (~2 pages):

Based on your literature review, provide an analysis on the importance of your topic developmentally. Are there certain developmental periods where you topic plays a bigger role or has more negative or positive impacts. Make sure you support your statements with your research articles.
Identify a limitation in the research on your topic.
What are important next steps that researchers must take to further the understanding of your topic?
Explain how the information you learned from doing this research or your suggested next steps could benefit people in the future.

 

References page must follow APA format

 

Technical Aspects of the Paper:

This paper is worth 40 points.
The paper should be 8-10 pages, excluding the Title and References pages.
The paper should be typed using Times/Times New Roman 12-point font, double-spaced and include one-inch margins.
In the incorporation of the research articles in your paper, present relevant information on the overall research goal, sample (e.g., age range of participants), methodology (e.g., survey, observational study) and key findings. Paraphrase your description of the studies and findings in your own words. Avoid excessive quoting in your paper as it is important that you show your understanding of the research study and findings.
In-text citations and the References page must follow 7th Edition APA format.
Late papers without professor approval will be docked 3 points per 24 hour period after the due date. Papers submitted 72 hours after the due date and time will not be accepted.

Developmental Milestones -(sub-headings of 0-12 years and 13-30 years)

Contextual Factors (sub-headings of gender, ethnicity and other) – cover all 3

Outcomes – sub-headings of Early Childhood outcomes, middle childhood outcomes, adolescence outcomes and Young adulthood outcomes.
