What is the similarities and differences between the first writing and the second writing . What did they leave out the second article included? What do these differences add to the discussion?
What is the author’s thesis.
First wirting: What is the author’s thesis? In our own words we can rephrase the thesis statement to be “Schooling kids for a future which is in doubt”. the author of the article uses the topic ‘are we educating students for a future that doesn’t exist’.
-How do you know? This is the first point to identify with the thesis of the article. The second evidence is the thesis statement (the last sentence from the first paragraph) this is the thesis of the article mainly because it joins the first and the second paragraph then he dives in deep and elaborates it in the subsequent paragraphs of the article.
-What evidence do they use to prove their thesis? Pieces of evidence to show it was the thesis are several. The emphasis of the statement is repeated using different terminologies and phrases; the first sentence of each paragraph speaks of how the current system is everchanging, and the future is uncertain. Examples from the send and third paragraphs “Today, more than ever before, the ground beneath our feet is continuously shifting — growing and expanding in ways few have been able to anticipate” and “A frightening example of this idea can be found in the legal field. A generation ago, becoming a lawyer was one of the most sought-after, highly acclaimed professions.” The last proof is in the last sentence, where the author has restated the thesis “… our kids run the risk of being rendered completely unprepared for the professional landscape of tomorrow.”
The future is uncertain, and the metacognition should be emphasized to prevent the shattering of the students’ dreams. Newer courses and soft skills should be taught in the schools to improve on the adaptability of the students to the everchanging education system and the world. Embracing technological advances is key for the next generation as newer opportunities will arise, and they will require an individual who is ready for the next move.
Today, more than ever before, the ground beneath our feet is continuously shifting — growing and expanding in ways few have been able to anticipate. And with exponential advances in technology being reached with each passing year, the pace at which the global economy is changing has increased proportionally. The fact is, we might be training the next crop of professionals for obsolescing positions, and we may be failing to accurately predict the yet-to-be-invented industries and professions of tomorrow.
How do you know?
We can identify these sentences as the thesis because, throughout the following paragraphs, the author is using relevant examples to prove this specific point. Everything ties back to these few sentences outline at the beginning of the article. The first paragraph is not the thesis because one can observe its main purpose being a hook that catches the reader’s attention.
What evidence do they use to prove their thesis?
Most of the author’s way of proving his thesis relies on relevant examples, not statistics or specific facts. The author uses technology, the legal industry, and social media as his main examples. Some statistical evidence was utilized when observing trends in law-school participation. For the most part, we rely on the author’s knowledge in this topic and take his word for the concern that he is trying to impress upon us.
