Analysis of Guidebook to Relative Strangers by Camille T. Dungy
Choose one of the following topics for your paper:
What three personal stories from the beginning, middle, and end of Dungy’s’ book created a certain impression on you as a reader; what was that impression, and how did these success stories impress you? Use the guide in The Little Seagull Handbook on Rhetorical Analysis format and integrate at least three examples and passages into your paper.
Analyze the intensification and plot elements such as flashback, memory, reflection, or flash forward that created an interesting tension in Dungy’s book. Use these elements and three or more examples from the beginning, middle, and end, to examine the answer to this question: how does Williams use plot to build tension and suspense in a book that is largely expository?
What are the most important chapters in Dungy’s book, for your own generation and experience, and why do you think these chapters especially relate to a certain age group? Detail the examples that create an impression on a certain audience. Identify the values and worldview of that audience–be sure to be specific about the date that the audience was born, and how that history interacts with the points raised by the book.
What are the key elements of nonfiction writing that help Dungy get her point across, and how does she use these elements along with exposition and presence to make her points work in various parts of the book? Use examples from the beginning, middle, and end of the book, at least five, to cover all the elements.
Tackle the chapters with the highest degree of social or political argument in them, and answer this question: how well does Dungy’s book help to illustrate some of the politics or gender issues current in our present day world? Also choose three or four chapters to support your explanation of these issues, and please also use one or more of the other essays in order to explain and support your explanation.
