THE RHETORICAL ANALYSIS ASSIGNMENT
Write a detailed analysis of the rhetorical situation and the rhetorical strategies used in the article
“Sweatshops are Good” by Jerome Sieger.
The rhetorical analysis essay is about how academic written arguments are presented. Its focus is on the
structures and techniques you, as a writer, will use to present your own arguments.
The rhetorical analysis is not a critical evaluation or response to what is said or what claim the writer makes; it
looks at how the writer uses the rhetoric of argument to support the claim.
ORGANIZATION OF THE RHETORICAL ANALYSIS ESSAY
Introduction:
Present the topic with a lead in. Identify the issue. Identify a specific article by name and author.
Present the rhetorical context for the article.
End the introduction with your claim about the rhetorical qualities.
(It is clear and well-written. It uses a variety of writing strategies and is skillfully presented. It offends
the reader from the outset. It never adequately supports its claim. Some sentence that indicates you think it is
well or poorly presenting its case is what you need.)
Development:
Present an objective, brief summary of the article. Refer to the author only by the last name. Do not
interpret or insert your opinions.
Development:
Topic sentence relating to rhetoric. You may discuss to rhetorical context and its appropriateness for
the audience. Or you may discuss the appeals used in the article. Use quotations to illustrate what you are
discussing. This part might be two or three separate paragraphs depending on the variety of appeals. Use
quotations to support your analysis.
Development:
Topic sentence relating to a different aspect of rhetoric. This may address the logic and reasoning,
amount and kind of support or evidence in the article. Use quotations to illustrate you point.
Development:
Topic sentence discussing argument structure. Is the opposing view presented? Is there a rebuttal of
the opposing view? Use quotations to support your points.
