Shiv Padora Temple

The architecture of sacred spaces embodies the dominant ideas and forces of beliefs and
society. Although there may be parameters, there are no absolute formulae for ‘sacred’ design
and thus the spaces of worship throughout time and place have served to encapsulate specific
qualities of the culture, geography, politics, technology, and interpretation of belief systems.
Historically, spaces of worship were privileged with the finest materials, workmanship and
unsurpassed human devotion to feel the divine.
Individually you will research your case study building and analyze the manifestation of the
specific space in relation to the relevant creation myth(s) and cosmologies of the belief
system(s) that contextualize the building. You will be expected to utilize at least three academic
sources in addition to any of your course texts and primary texts for the creation myth(s).
The study of a contemporary sacred building is a unique challenge. You will need to utilize scant
materials and delve into contextual historical study connecting the language of the building to
local culture and historical buildings of the same type in that region and possibly other
contemporary buildings.
Using the written word, in essay format, you will clearly identify your thesis and use the body of
the paper to support it. Your written analysis will be paralleled with a model analysis that will be
developed concurrently and have the same thesis and focus. The requirements for this are
outlined in a separate document.
The research paper will be no shorter than 2,000 words and no longer than 2,500 words and will
use standard Chicago Manual of Style for citations.
