Criminal Justice Research Paper and proposal

CJ–051 Research Assignments (Proposal and Paper)There are two related assignments, which together comprise 35% of your final grade. The first component is a paper proposal worth 10% of your final grade. The second component is a research paper worth 25% of your final grade. The research paper will follow the topic and research question outlined in your paper proposal and provide arguments to support its thesis statement. You must re-submit your graded proposal and all writing workshop participation components with your final paper. . General Guidelines that Apply to Both Assignments: Your assignments must be original pieces of work. You may not submit work from another class in whole or in part. Be vigilant with source referencing. In addition to citing direct quotations, make sure you cite sources whenever you paraphrase or draw ideas from someone else’s work, and include page numbers. More often than not, citations should reference page numbers! When in doubt, cite. You cannot over-cite, but plagiarism is a serious academic offence. Use APA formatting. In addition to covering citations during one of the writing workshops,. Do not cite with footnotes or endnotes. Do not cite online journal articles as if they are web references – cite them and include them in your “Works Cited” (bibliography) as if they are hard copies. Staple your submissions in the top left-hand corner. Number your pages.  REASEARCH PROPOSAL Learning Objective: In addition to providing hands-on experience with the important act of proposal writing, this assignment will help you improve your research and thesis-writing skills. It will also help you begin the research project for your final paper. From these sources, you will extract arguments to help support your thesis statement and answer a research question about a contemporary issue within the Canadian Criminal Justice System.
This assignment will allow the opportunity for you to receive feedback on your approach to the research question and the strength of your proposed thesis statement before submission of your final paper. You will need to re-submit your completed, graded proposal (including the comments you receive) with the final paper. How to Proceed: 1.Select a topic: Your topic must deal with Criminal Justice issue in Canada. 2.Research: Once you have a preliminary idea about what topic interests you, you must do some research. i.Find a minimum of three scholarly sources relevant to your topic. ii.These sources must be come from peer-review publications. iii.Your sources must also be relatively recent, published within the past 15 years. . iv.Use sources from the University of Winnipeg’s library catalogue and databases (this includes the online journal collections). I strongly recommend that you take advantage of the online collection because it will make it much easier to narrow your search results by topic to peer-review published within the past 15 years. v.These academic sources should be able to shed some light on your research question. 3.Writing the proposal: The proposal should be one (to two) double-spaced page. i.Briefly outline the debate you plan to engage. Specifically state what the problem or research question is that you wish to resolve. ii.Outline how you will use your scholarly sources together to answer or address this question using sociological perspectives. Cite sources using reference guidelines (see below). iii.Propose a statement/thesis that answers the research question. 4.Include your references on a separate page (see guidelines below). Mechanics and Formatting: The paper proposal will be three to four pages: 1.Title page 2.Outline of your topic and thesis statement (1-2 pages)3.Bibliography of References on separate page.Title page:
Include the title of your proposed paper. Give your paper an interesting title. Do not simply call it “Research Paper.” Make the title relevant to your topic and feel free to be creative with it. . All assignments must be typed, presented in hard copy, and follow the relevant formatting guidelines Proposal Body: Outline and Thesis Statement: The proposal should be one to three paragraphs, double-spaced and follow standard formatting of margins (1” margins on all sides, justified left, no additional spacing before or after paragraphs). For fonts, use Times New Roman, size 12. It is obvious when unorthodox spacing, margins, font sizes, etc. are used in paper submissions. Please avoid this practice, as it will cost marks. Cite sources in your proposal paragraph. Use APA formatting for citations. References Provide a separate sheet for your references. References should be provided in alphabetical order by author’s last name. Use APA-style referencing guidelines. Remember that you are to include a minimum of three scholarly sources. RESEARCH PAPER Learning Objectives: Using the constructive feedback you received on the proposal assignment and all of the participation assignments, you will continue to develop the topic, research, and answer to the research question outlined in your proposal. This assignment will help you find your own voice and to logically think through and organize support for an argument. Your evaluation will primarily be based on:the way you bring together and combine the research and sources to formulate and support your argument; and the structure, succinctness, and clarity of your writing. The purpose of this assignment is for you to demonstrate that you are thinking through an issue (rather than simply summarizing others’ work by means of paraphrasing content and resubmitting without seriously thinking through the organization and trajectory of your argument). It is how you use and mobilize the research you have collected that is the key point ofinterest here.
This assignment will help you formulate an evidence-based argument based on research rather than opinion. Detailed Expectations for Content: The research paper will be 6-8 pages double-spaced, plus title page and references. It will follow the same formatting guidelines as the proposal. It requires a new title page. Re-submit your graded proposal assignment .In addition to the three scholarly sources noted in the proposal, you will need to include another three scholarly references, bringing the scholarly sources referenced in your paper to a total minimum of six. The bibliography will follow after the research essay. Your introduction must include: 1)a summary of the Criminal Justice issue you will be engaging and the research question itraised 2)a detailed thesis statement, and suggestions as to why your proposition is important 3)an overview of the main points you will use to support your thesis statement, laying out the structure and content of the essay Your introduction should introduce the reader to the topic that you intend to discuss in your essay. Your introduction should move from the general to the specific. Your introduction should begin with a general opening topic sentence that introduces the topic you intend to study, and then you can move on to discuss what you will specifically examine in your essay. The body must: 1)be logically organized. Points should flow clearly from beginning to middle to concluding statements and follow a clear trajectory that strengthens the thesis in its form of presentation. 2)demonstrate that you are making an effort to engage the issue rather than merely summarizing and paraphrasing key points laid out by the authors of your sources(a).I will be assessing your ability to appraise a current issue in the Canadian criminal justice system. You will want to move beyond reciting and repeating key points. You will want to deconstruct, combine, and synthesize sources while critiquing and/or defending concepts and positions. b.use quotes and academic sources effectively. Do not over-quote, or quote or paraphrase one source at length. You want to demonstrate mastery by succinctly and clearly paraphrasing and applying the concept. The conclusion should:
1)reiterate your thesis statement and its importance as it has to do with the research problem you are concerned with in this paper.2)bring all the pieces together and offer a synthesis that goes beyond your introduction 3)include suggestions for further research based on your findings or what you perceive to be gaps in the study of this issue
