Week two questions

You should write 2-3 sentences for each question.
On Introduction to Religious Studies from The Religion Toolkit by John Morreall & Tamara Sonn
1. The authors write “Many are also surprised to discover how different learning aboutreligion is from learning a religion. The goals and methods of the academic study of religion are quite distinct from those found in devotional or normative study of religion” (Morreall & Sonn 1). In 3-4 sentences, please explain the meaning of these sentences, and discuss why these ideas are relevant to our study of African religions.
2. According to the authors, is it important for students and scholars of religion to agree and engage with the religious practices they study? Why or why not?
3. On page 4, the authors explain the difficulty understanding religion, and they add that this is compounded by the fact that many languages do not have a word for “religion.” Why is this? Does this mean that the cultures with languages that don’t have a word for religion are not religious? Explain your answer, using the reading as a source.
4. On page 8, the authors advocate an “objective” approach to studying religion, even as they discuss the difficulty in remaining objective about religion. What do they mean by studying religion “objectively”? Do you think you can study African religions in this way? Why or why not?

On the Brittanica.com “Africa” Entry (focus your reading on the “Introduction” and “People” sections):
5. What is Africa, according to the Introduction on this site? What are some of the origins of the name?
6. Discuss some of what you learned about the various ethnic groups in Africa.
7. What are the different “culture areas” in Africa, according to the “People” section? How is this different from the distinct countries in these regions?
8. What does the article have to say about the distribution of religious groups in Africa? What are they, and where are they, according to this article?
